Motivation

Currently watching Chicago, and for some reason it brings me back to middle school - not that middle school was anything like the movie, far from it really. After a few days off I should really start to get back into the swing of things.

I need to make art.

Procrastination...

I really don't want to work on my essay, so instead...here are some letters. A weekly alphabet for my Handletters course.

Fibrous Update

So! Since I've been posting mostly my illustrations, here are some of my fiber-related works from the past year. While I love working in gouache, watercolor and ink it's such a relief sometimes to embroider (and most recently weave). To be honest, I'm starting to question where my true interests lie. Is it in fibers or illustration? Will it be enough to combine the two, I'm worried that I won't be satisfied with just that. But enough with self-reflection, here is some art!

Weaving Numbah One

Exploration in partial weft, cotton, 15"x72"

I realized that I've only shown yarn, but I haven't really posted any pictures of my actual weavings...so here you are! These aren't the best photos, but I'm hoping to get some better ones by the end of the year. This was from out first assignment - structure & tool. I did a two-way ombre dye for the warp (ochre-green on the top half and a lavender-periwrinkle on the bottom half) and the weft was all dyed the same color. My tool was essentially my shuttle, and as you can see there are moments where the weft was not shot all the way across, and this was where I ended up using two shuttles. The orange is supplementary weft, although I don't think I'm all to pleased with the excess hanging out. Despite that and some color issues I'm pretty happy with it though! I'm hoping my final for this class will be even better.

On a side note, now that I've taken this class I desperately want a loom, but is it worth getting one now? Oh the difficult decisions in life!

Update:
I finally took some better photos of the weaving, enjoy!

Alphabets Galore!

This was my first time making a repeating pattern and I have to say, it was pretty fun! The pattern here was an assignment for my Handletters class. We had to make a pattern based on alphabets for one of Spoonflower's weekly competitions. I think I'll be making more patterns in the near future :)

Places and Spaces

These were from my last Illustration II assignment, which was to create three environments that conveyed a specific mood (she gave a list of 6 descriptive words to choose from). The three I chose were "simple", "cluttered" and "quiet". Each were done in watercolor with some colored pencil to finish.

Weekends are deadly

Huzzah for procrastination! It's a lazy sunday and I don't want to work at all, so instead I'll post some work. This is a couple years old, but it's a piece that I'm particularly attached to. It's painted in encaustic, which I played around with a lot near the end of my senior year but I've used it less since I went to college. I miss it though...one day I'll start painting again!

These are some samples from my handletters class this semester. I never knew how fun creating new letter forms could be!

Explorations

Long time no blog! Springtime is here again but it seems to hiding still, only a couple of nice days but now it's gotten cold again. Warm weather will come soon enough though, I guess it just takes time. Anyways, it's been a long time since I've updated so here we go! I know I keep saying this, but really, I will get better at posting more regularly...one day. ;p

These are some pieces that I did for my Illustration class, but were explorations into new mediums - or at least mediums that I was unfamiliar with. Despite some trouble in the beginning, I think these turned out well, but there's always room for improvement.

yarn yarn yarn!

Oy, I do need to get better at posing regularly! These are just some skeins of yarn I dyed this weekend for a weaving course. From these we'll be making "color blankets", just another color study/weaving I'm pretty sure. It's taking classes like these that remind me how wonderful it is to actually make something, it's such a great break from illustration.

Back into the swing of things

Classes have finally started! The workload is still pretty light, but I know that won't last long. Here are some more sketches for now, but I'll start posting work soon. It's nice to be back :)

Goodbye Durham, at least for now. I'll miss you, but...I also can't wait to get back to Baltimore.

A little side project that I hope to finish before classes start, let's hope the final looks a little better when it's finished, hahaha.

Fall

These are just a couple more pieces from last semester that I wanted to post, I'm going to try to start updating with new work as soon as possible.
(The top two are painted in gouache, and the bottom was an embroidery done for a short story for one of my classes.)

Happy New Years!

So! After a long period of telling myself to start a blog here I am, finally making one. I guess this was one New Years resolution that I've managed to tackle. Right now I'm be posting some work from last semester, but I'll be updating this blog with sketchbook excerpts and project updates. Above is an illustration for the three little pigs that I painted earlier in the fall.
